Hi and welcome to the DPC Newsletter for August 2017.

The final course dates for 2017 are now on the website.

For those seeking picture ideas this month’s project is  “The Golden Hour” and I’ve included some sample images and tips below below for  inspiration. I've just added extra Intermediate Courses on Sunday 3rd September and Sunday 12th November 2017 as the August one sold out in a few days. You can book online here - http://digitalphotographycourses.co.uk/photography-course-intermediate.html

October is Flash Month
We have a Studio Portrait Course on Sunday 1st October and a Flash Photography Course on Saturday 7th October 2017.

Studio Flash Portrait Course
Both courses cover portrait photography but the studio course uses various coloured backgrounds with mains powered flashes on light stands with softboxes and umbrellas. This day will show you how to get professional looking portrait in your own home. Everything is provided on the day and I'll make suggestions for kit a different price points.

Speedlight Flash Course
The speedlight flash course is for people that have a speedlight and would like to know how to get the best from it. This is useful for those who like to travel light. This course does include portrait photography, both indoors and outside, plus some creating lighting techniques and I’ll show you how I set up the Water Melon shot. You will require some method to fire the flash off camera but I can advise if required.

The August Project is - "The Golden Hour"

The Golden Hour is generally recognised as the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. It is a favourite time for photographers as the quality of light takes on a warm glow. It’s liked especially by landscape photographers as this warmth is accompanied by long shadows and improved textures and by the deeper shadows.  A good tip is to try the Daylight and Cloudy white balances to maintain the warmth which the Auto White Balance (AWB) might remove.

I've included sample images below but you are encouraged to be as diverse as possible and remember to upload to the DPC Facebook Group.

Speedlight Flash Photography Course on Saturday 7th October 2017

On the beginners course we discussed how using the camera's built in flash can result in pictures which are flat and uninteresting. This can be improved hugely by using a seperate speedlight flash to produce professional looking results.

The Flash Photography Course aims to change this pop-up scenario and will give you a good understanding of how to use a separate flashgun away from the camera to provide more exciting portraits and creative lighting techniques.

Flash Course

This is a Level Two course so you will need to have attended a beginners course first. During this photography course you will learn about :

  • The menus, settings and controls of your flashgun
  • How to use the flash on camera for bounce flash
  • How to use the flash off the camera with a cable
  • How to use the flash remotely off the camera with wireless triggers
  • How to use the Nikon or Canon Creative Lighting Systems
  • How to use flashguns for more creative lighting
  • How to use your flash outdoors for fill-in flash
  • How to take exciting portraits using flash

We hope you have enjoyed this newsletter.
