The luminar 4 course is a ful day course covering the basic tabs including sky replacements, inserting objects and a quick and easy portrait retouch. Greatly simplified versions of these techniques can be seen in the videos below. In the afternoon we look at advanced settings, adjustment and image layes, stamp layers, the clone and erase tools and exporting images.

I’ve been doing portrait retouches for many years, using a variety of programs,  including Lightroom, Photoshop and Portrait Professional. Luminar 4 – Differences with Lightroom

  • Unlike Lightroom and Photoshop Luminar 4 is purchased outright and you should continue to get updates for the lifetime of your version.
  • It can be used as a LR or PS plugin or as a stand-alone program.
  • It is available for the Mac and Windows and in multiple languages.
  • It includes a Library Module so you can sort, cull, rate or mark images as favourites.
  • It is very easy to use with the basic tabs but also it’s very powerful when you delve into the advanced sections.
  • It can be used as a normal image editor with many of the tools you would recognise in Lightroom, Photoshop or Picasa.
  • Unlike Lightroom, Luminar can use layers.
  • Images can be exported in a variety of formats and sizes.
  • Luminar 4 can work with image and adjustment layers.

Lightroom - Photoshop - Luminar 4

Personally, I like to use it as a Lightroom plug-in.

 You can use Luminar 4 as a stand alone program or as a Lightroom plug-in which is how I like to use it. I like the filing and keywording system built into Lightroom plus I find the basic editing faster.
 

My Workflow

  1. Import, cull and keyword my images in Lightroom
  2. Rate my keepers and the images I want to edit
  3. Do basic edits and decide to coninue with Lightroom or drop into Photoshop or Luminar 4
  4. If the sky needs replacing then export to Lumimar 4
  5. For a quick and simple portrait edit export to Luminar 4
  6. For minor object removals use Lightroom
  7. For larger object removal us Photoshop or Luminar 4
  8. Working with layer Photoshop as a first choice the Luminar
  9. Adding text Photoshop or Picasa.
  10. Exporting images – best done in Lightroom.

The selection of products can be confusing so for the course you will need
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop CC
  • Creative Cloud Manager
  • Lightroom Cloud
You will not need Lightroom CC for the the course, but it is included in the monthly subscription, so you may as well download it.
 
You do not need Adobe Bridge as this is basically a file manager which is what Lightroom also includes. Not having Bridge also saves you over a GB of space.
 

You cannot buy the plan outright as it’s only available a subscription. I buy mine on an annual basis as this feels less like renting.
